Africa is a continent of extraordinary natural wealth. From the forests of the Congo Basin and the wetlands of the Okavango Delta to the great rivers, grasslands, mountains and coastlines that stretch across the continent, Africa's natural environment supports hundreds of millions of people and provides resources that sustain communities, industries and economies. Yet behind this extraordinary natural wealth is a growing crisis that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: Africa's waste and pollution problem.
This crisis is not simply about litter on streets or overflowing bins. It is about what happens when valuable resources are treated as rubbish, when electronic equipment is discarded without thought for what it contains, when plastics enter rivers and oceans, when waste is burned in uncontrolled conditions, and when communities are forced to live alongside poorly managed dumpsites. It is also about something much bigger: the question of whether Africa can develop economically while protecting the land, water, air, biodiversity and people upon which that development ultimately depends.
The good news is that Africa is not without solutions. In fact, researchers, universities, governments, environmental organisations, entrepreneurs and businesses across the continent are increasingly exploring a different model — one in which waste is viewed not simply as something to be thrown away, but as a potential source of materials, employment, innovation and economic value.
That idea is at the heart of the circular economy.
And for those of us working with electronics, it has particular significance.
The Scale of the Challenge
The scale of the challenge is difficult to comprehend. UNEP has reported that more than 90% of waste generated in many African settings is disposed of at uncontrolled dumpsites and landfills, often with open burning, while an estimated 70–80% of waste generated in Africa could be recyclable. Yet only around 4% is currently recycled. That is an extraordinary gap between what we currently do and what is technically possible.
It is also a warning.
Because every piece of waste that is unnecessarily dumped represents something that could potentially have been recovered, reused, repaired, recycled or transformed into another useful product.
This is particularly important as Africa urbanises and its population becomes increasingly connected to modern technology. Smartphones, computers, televisions, tablets, appliances and other electronic products have become essential parts of modern African life. Digitalisation is creating enormous opportunities for education, communication, business, healthcare and economic development. But there is another side to this technological revolution that receives far less attention: what happens to all those devices when they stop working or are replaced?
That is where electronic waste — or e-waste — enters the conversation.
The E-Waste Problem in Africa
The World Health Organization describes e-waste as one of the world's fastest-growing solid-waste streams. Globally, approximately 62 million tonnes of e-waste were generated in 2022, yet only 22.3% was documented as formally collected and recycled. Africa's position is particularly concerning. According to the ITU and UNITAR's Global E-waste Monitor 2024, African countries generated approximately 2 billion kilograms of e-waste in 2022, representing just under 3.3% of global e-waste generation. South Africa and Nigeria were the two largest contributors, producing approximately 527 million kilograms and 497 million kilograms respectively. At the same time, Africa had the world's lowest documented formal collection and recycling rate, at less than 1%.
These numbers should make every African who owns a cellphone, computer, television or other electronic device stop and think.
Because e-waste is not ordinary rubbish.
An old smartphone may contain copper, aluminium, plastics, glass and other recoverable materials. Electronic equipment can also contain valuable metals such as gold and silver and other strategically important materials. At the same time, some electronic products contain substances that can be hazardous when they are improperly dismantled, burned, dumped or recycled without appropriate safeguards. The WHO specifically warns that informal e-waste recycling can release toxic substances and expose workers, families and surrounding communities to health risks.
This is why the environmental conversation surrounding electronics needs to change.
When a person says, "It's just an old phone," they may be looking at a broken piece of technology. An environmental steward sees something different: a product containing resources that may still have value, components that may be reusable, and materials that should be kept out of uncontrolled waste streams.
The Human Cost
And there is a human cost when we get this wrong.
The WHO has warned that children are particularly vulnerable to hazardous exposures associated with informal e-waste recycling. Its research estimated that as many as 18 million children and adolescents and 12.9 million women may be at risk of adverse health outcomes linked to e-waste recycling activities. The concern is not theoretical. Informal recycling can involve dismantling equipment, burning components and recovering metals without adequate protective equipment or environmental controls.
A discarded electronic device therefore has a life beyond the moment it leaves our hands.
Where it goes matters.
How it is dismantled matters.
How its materials are recovered matters.
And ultimately, who is exposed to the consequences matters.
The Circular Economy Solution
This is one of the reasons the circular economy is becoming increasingly important in Africa. Rather than following the traditional linear model of "take, make, use and throw away", the circular economy seeks to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible through activities such as reuse, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling. The African Development Bank describes circularity as an important opportunity for Africa to use resources more efficiently while creating economic opportunities, strengthening resilience and supporting sustainable industrialisation.
Professor David Mungai, Deputy Director of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi, has spoken about precisely this change in mindset. In an interview published by UNEP, he argued that Africa should look at solid waste "as a resource."
That statement deserves attention.
Because if we start viewing waste as a resource, the question changes from "How do we get rid of this?" to "What can we recover from this?"
That is a completely different approach to development.
Imagine a broken laptop. The traditional approach is to throw it away. A circular approach asks whether the laptop can be repaired. If it cannot, perhaps its screen, memory, storage, casing, power supply or other components can be recovered. If those components are no longer useful, the materials themselves may still have value through appropriate recycling.
The same principle applies to smartphones, tablets, televisions, gaming consoles, printers and thousands of other products.
Repair is therefore an environmental activity.
Every time we repair a device instead of prematurely replacing it, we potentially extend the useful life of that product and delay the environmental consequences associated with manufacturing and disposing of another device.
Policy and Responsibility
That philosophy is increasingly reflected in policy.
South Africa, for example, has established an Extended Producer Responsibility framework under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act No. 59 of 2008. The regulations regarding Extended Producer Responsibility were published under Government Notice R.1184, while the specific Extended Producer Responsibility measures for the electrical and electronic equipment sector were published under R.1185 in November 2020.
The significance of this goes beyond legislation.
It represents a recognition that the responsibility for products should not simply end when the consumer buys them. Their life cycle — including what happens after they are no longer wanted — matters.
But legislation alone will not solve Africa's environmental crisis.
Consumers have a role. Businesses have a role. Manufacturers have a role. Repair companies have a role. Recyclers have a role. Municipalities have a role. Schools and universities have a role. And perhaps most importantly, communities have a role.
The person who decides not to throw a battery into an ordinary rubbish bin is part of the solution. The parent who teaches a child not to litter is part of the solution. The business that keeps its obsolete computers out of an uncontrolled dumpsite is part of the solution. The technician who repairs a phone instead of encouraging unnecessary replacement is part of the solution. The recycler who responsibly recovers materials is part of the solution.
Environmental stewardship is not something that belongs exclusively to governments or environmental scientists. It is something ordinary people practise through ordinary decisions.
Beyond Electronics: Plastics and Technology
And Africa's waste problem extends far beyond electronics.
Plastic is another enormous challenge. UNEP estimates that plastic makes up around 13% of municipal solid waste generated in Africa, while organic waste accounts for approximately 57%. UNEP has also warned that if current consumption patterns continue, plastic consumption demand in Africa could increase dramatically by 2060.
The consequences can reach far beyond the place where waste is initially discarded.
Waste can block drainage systems. It can enter waterways. It can contribute to flooding. It can degrade landscapes and ecosystems. Open burning can release pollutants into the atmosphere. Uncontrolled dumpsites can expose workers and surrounding communities to hazardous substances.
This is why some of the most interesting environmental research currently taking place is increasingly combining technology with environmental management.
Researchers are exploring how artificial intelligence, aerial imagery, satellite data and machine learning can help identify waste accumulation and illegal dumping. Recent research has investigated AI-assisted mapping of dispersed waste across multiple regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, demonstrating the potential for technology to help identify environmental hotspots at a scale that would be difficult to achieve through manual inspection alone.
Technology helped create the modern e-waste problem. Technology can also help us solve it.
Africa is Developing Solutions
The research community is not waiting for the future either. International organisations are already investing in new approaches. UNEP, for example, is currently implementing the Circular and POPs-free Plastics in Africa project across Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The programme, running from 2024 to 2030, has a total value of approximately US$90.9 million and focuses on reducing hazardous chemicals associated with plastics and supporting a transition toward more circular systems, including within the electronics sector.
These developments are important because they demonstrate something that is sometimes forgotten when discussing Africa's environmental problems:
Africa is not simply a continent facing an environmental crisis. Africa is also a continent developing environmental solutions.
There are African entrepreneurs transforming waste into products. There are engineers developing recycling technologies. There are scientists researching pollution. There are universities teaching circular economy principles. There are governments developing EPR systems. There are young people creating businesses around resource recovery.
The opportunity is enormous. Waste management does not have to be viewed purely as a cost. It can become an industry. It can create businesses, jobs, and new supply chains. It can reduce dependence on virgin raw materials, encourage innovation, and help African economies capture more of the value contained within the resources they already have.

For electronics companies in particular, this creates an enormous responsibility and an enormous opportunity.

Before an electronic device becomes waste, ask whether it can be repaired. Before buying a replacement, ask whether the existing device can be refurbished. Before throwing an old device away, ask whether someone else could still use it. And when a device genuinely reaches the end of its useful life, make sure it enters an appropriate recycling or recovery stream rather than an uncontrolled waste stream.
This is not about being perfect. It is about being responsible.
One phone does not solve Africa's environmental crisis. One repaired laptop does not solve Africa's e-waste problem. One responsible business does not transform an entire industry. But millions of responsible decisions can.
The environmental future of Africa will not be determined by one organisation, one government or one environmental campaign. It will be shaped by millions of choices made every day by consumers, businesses, communities and institutions.
The choice to repair instead of replace. The choice to reuse instead of discard. The choice to recycle instead of dump. The choice to recover value instead of waste it. The choice to protect a river instead of pollute it. The choice to teach the next generation that the environment is not somebody else's responsibility.
It belongs to all of us.
Africa's environmental crisis is real. The statistics are serious. The consequences of doing nothing are potentially enormous. But the story does not have to end there. Africa has the people, natural resources, entrepreneurial talent, scientific capability and technological creativity to build something better.
The question is whether we have the will to change the way we think about waste.
Perhaps the most important thing we can do is stop asking: "How do we get rid of our waste?"
And start asking: "How do we keep our resources in circulation, protect our environment and create value from what we already have?"
That is the promise of the circular economy. That is the responsibility of environmental stewardship. And that is a future worth building for Africa.
